Veteran’s Story: Larry Barnett served from 1967-1971. He served in the USMC. Between 1968-1969 he was stationed in Vietnam. He was in 11 combat operations, including operations: Massachusetts, Purple Martin, Herkimer, William Glade, Georgia Tar, Scotland II, Kentucky, Lancaster II and Scotland. He was never the same when he returned home. He was not able to hold down a job and exhibited classic PTSD syndrome. He was in and out of psychiatric hospitals. He was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia. He committed suicide in 1979. To date, the DVA refuses to recognize his psychological illness. They refuse to diagnosis him with PTSD and claim that his “schizophrenia” was not service connected. My father is a hero and served his country with loyalty and exceptional service as indicated by his military awards. We only hope that he can be recognized for this service. The scars continute to run deep for all of us. If anyone knew my father, please contact me at kdesq@aol.com.
