Veteran’s Story: I met Jim one week after is service time in the USA Army and Vietnam was done. His family told me that he was never quite the same after Vietnam. I know that he was mentally ill from the experience and I was young and didn’t understand all that he was going through. We divorced after 7 years of marriage and 2 beautiful children. His shrink told him he was experiencing PTSD Syndrome and Jim was on medication for years that seemed to help him. Jim and I were able to be good friends, thanks to the fellowship of AA. I sobered up and finally made amends to him for not being the wife he needed after the Vietnam War. Jim remarried, Karen and was married to her for 17 years. I am remarried also to Tom, for 11 years now. I know that mentally he was a tortured man, he said his world was so “dark.” On Sunday morning, April 17, 2005, Jim took his own life. We are devastated by the loss. Our children are 33 and 30 years old now and we have two granddaughters, 13 and 10 years old. I know he was happy to be around them and I know he was very proud of all of them. Only God knows why he did this. He is at peace now. There are no Vietnam war memories or mind altering chemicals in Heaven. May he find the “light.”
