Veteran’s Story: Jerry was my leading Chief Petty Officer in Vietnam. A big, blustery yet lovable individual. We next met when he was assigned to the Naval Hospital at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 1975-78. After his tour there he was promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer and ended his Navy career as the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Command at Naval Hospital. Jerry suffered for years from migraine headaches. After retirement, he lived in the Pensacola area and attended college and worked as a manager for a group medical practice. One day, he took off, drove to his parents grave site in central Florida and committed suicide. I have often wondered why.
